Monday newsletter 3-28-11

General I hope all of you enjoyed to 3 day weekend. I enjoyed the teachers conference for LEA in Cincinnati. We are moving steadily into the 4th and last quarter of the year. Please keep reminding your child school goes to the end of the year not till the weather turns nicer. This is a relatively normal week. We probably won't have Spanish tomorrow, Ms Abate's mother passed away from cancer last Friday. The funeral was today. Friday is a dress down day. I don't know what the money is going for, just that it is a dress down day. Next month about the middle are the achievement tests. Easter is at the end of the month. Don't forget to return the report card "quarter" slip and the envelope by Friday. The Social Studies test should be in by tomorrow. They will get their Science and English tests this week sometime. Work Memory for Friday is Col. 3:13 on page 83. There will be a spelling test on Friday this week also and the list and project will be given to them on tomorrow. There will be a test on Ch. 6 in Social Studies on Wed. (we are switching Soc. St. and Sci. again) It is on the 13 colonies - who were the leaders settling them and why they were settled. I explained this to the class as to what they need to know. Everything they need is on the maps and the charts that are below the maps. We are starting Adverbs in English and later in the week we will be starting a chapter on Matter in Science. There will be a Math test on Friday this week. I am going to talk about lesson 87 but not do the work. There will be several other lessons that we will not do so we get the necessary lessons done by the end of the quarter. Thurs. is the end of the month and book reports and monthly memory are due then. Sports Sign up sheets have been put up for track. The 5th and 6th compete as a team. I haven't heard any information about practices. The meets are in May. There are 3 major meets on the Sat. in May and June. They are the League meet, Regional meet and the State meet. Writing Workshop - they have to do the rough draft for their paper it is due on Tues. Mar.29
English - test on chapter 4 on adjectives

Reading - WS 115 is due tomorrow and the drawings and sentences are due on Mon.
Social Studies - the map for the Middle Colonies needs to be labeled and colored by Thurs.

There will be no entries the rest of the week since I will be in Cincinnati at the LEA Convocation I will be back next Mon. for the Monday newsletter.

assignment update 3-21-11

Math - my class has lesson 83 and I think Mr. Anders' class has lesson 90 and a test.

Reading - WS 115 cursive due Wed. and they have to write 4 sentences using a multiple meaning word then they have to draw a picture using the other meaning of the word. They have paper for the pictures and sentence. This is due next Monday.

Social Studies - we filled in the chart for the Middle Colonies and they have to label and color the 4 colonies on the map for Thurs.

Science - test tomorrow during the Social Studies period for chapter 17 ( I want to be here when this test is given to answer questions about the test)

English - we graded the worksheet for today, but I had them keep it so they can review the proper adjectives that are on that worksheet. I will collect it with the test, I wouldn't have time to look at it and record it and get it back to them before I leave on Wed. Then there is a test on Thurs. for chapter 5.

Writing Workshop - they have to have the opinion paper outline done for tomorrow.

Monday newsletter 3-21-11

General
Happy the first day of spring. But from what I heard on the weather forecast this morning the rest of the week doesn't sound much like spring. Don't forget this is a short week with no school on Friday. This is a break since it is so long till Easter and Easter break. I also will be gone on Wed. and Thurs. Mrs. Meseke, Mrs. Brown, Mrs Ramsey, Mr. Petzold and I are attending the LEA Convocation in Cincinatti. LEA is our teacher organization - Lutheran Education Association -like the NEA for public school teachers. Report cards will be sent home this week Thurs. Remember to sign the sheet for 3rd quarter that you saw the report card and keep the copy. The envelope and "Quarter" note should be turned in by next Thurs. March 31st. It seems there are signs of "springitis" setting in for some of the class so a gentle reminder that school work is still very important and one's best effort should still be put forth.
Work
Since there is no school on Friday there will be no Friday memory and no spelling this week. It is a good week to work on Monthly Memory. The 3rd memory should be done by or during this week. Next week is the last week of the month. This is testing week. There is a Science test tomorrow on chapter 17, an English test Thurs. on chapter 5 - adjectives and my class has a math test on Thurs. The Social Studies test was returned today and it needs to be signed or a note or email sent by Monday. March 28. We are settling the 13 colonies in Social Studies and that is a short chapter so there probably be a test on that chapter sometime next week.
Sports
Nothing is happening with "Trinity" sports at this time. The Upward Basketball program has their end of the season Celebration Night this Friday evening. Track will probably start sometime during the first week of April or soon thereafter.

assignment update 3-18-11

Math - my class has lesson 82 and Mr. Anders' class has lesson 89.
Writing Workshop - They have received the chart for working on the Shroud of Turin paper. They are to decide what their opinion is about the Shroud is it real or not. Then with your assistance they are to do some other research and write 3 reasons supporting their opinion. They also need to write 3 subpoints for each reason. The subpoints need to be related to the reasons. These are necessary for Tues. Mar. 22 so they can be developing their paper.
Social Studies - I did not get the test graded last night, it will be ready on Monday. We started Chapter 6 today on the 13 colonies. They have to label and color the New England map. We did the chart together in class.
Science - we graded everything but Checkpoint 4 today which we will do on Monday. There will be a review on Monday and a test on Ch. 17 on Tues.
English - WS 5 is due on Mon. there will be a test on Ch. 4 on Thurs.
Religion - page 80 and 81 due for Monday

assignment update 3-15-11

Math - my class had a test today and we graded the rest of lesson 79 and half of lesson 80. I also posted any missing math assignments up through lesson 75. They have to have the corrections for lessons through 80 in by Friday for the 3rd quarter report card. Any corrections not in by then will become zeroes. Mr. Anders' class has lesson 86.

Writing Workshop - they viewed the video on the Shroud of Turin today, they did not have an assignment. Review what Mrs. Brown put in the Monday note yesterday.

Spelling - they received their list today and their project. They are both due on Friday.

Social Studies - we review today and there is a test on Ch. 5 on Thurs. They should study their note sheets and use their study guide sheet for questions to answer. The explorers will be "Who am I questions" if you want to help your child study.

I posted a list of all missing work today that needs to be turned in by Friday. So your child knows what they should complete by Friday of past work. Any work this week not done when assigned will also have to be completed by Friday.

End of the quarter is Friday, late, absent and missing work need to be in by Friday. For my math class all corrections through lesson 80 will be due on Friday for the 3rd quarter math grade.

Monday newsletter 3-14-11

General
Special Person's Day went well Friday. Thank you for any part you may have had in getting someone to come or to have participated yourself. The members from the class represented us well at the Lutheran High North Talent Festival on Sat. Some of them won and some of them didn't. But they all prepared well and did their best which them winners in their own right. This week will be an almost normal week, which we haven't had in quite some time. The one change is chapel/church is at 10:00 am on Wed and math is early. The end of the 3rd Quarter is Friday and report cards will be sent home on Wed. the 23rd. Any late, absent or missing work needs to be in by Friday.
Work
Friday's memory is Philippians 2:13 on page 75. There will be a spelling test on Friday and they will receive their list and project tomorrow. There will be a test in Social Studies on Thurs. They have their notes, a map and a study guide to use to study for the test. We will review tomorrow. There are a Science and English tests coming up next week or the first part of the following week. My math class has a test tomorrow and lesson 80. All lesson corrections through lesson 80 need to be in by Friday. We graded lesson 78 and half of 79 today. They received the information on how to do the March book report today. Below is a note from Mrs. Brown about their upcoming writing project.

From Mrs. Brown: Your 5th grader has been given an intriguing assignment: decide if he/she believes if the Shroud of Turin is really the burial cloth of Christ, or a hoax. I've given the students a brief description of the Shroud, with some opinions for and against its authenticity. In class, we're watching "The Real Face of Jesus" DVD from the History Channel. That's just the starting point! I'd like your child, with your help, to do some research on-line to gather more information on the Shroud. Based on this research, I'd like your child to state his/her opinion about the Shroud and then fill in the chart (which will come home on Thursday, March 18) with three compelling reasons for his/her opinion, along with three subpoints under each reason. The subpoints must be related to the reason. We will use this as the basis for writing the opinion paper. Completed chart is due Tuesday, March 22nd.

assignment update/ reminder 3-11-11

Thank you for a great Special Persons Day. I hope all of the special people enjoyed the day as well. If you were not here come to the hallway Sunday morning after or before church or next week and see all of the wonderful things that are up for all of the classes. I didn't get out a blog Wed or yesterday. I apologize. Wed I just plain forgot and yesterday there was nothing due for today. But for Monday.
Math - of course there is math. My class has lesson 79 and corrections through lesson 77. Mr. Anders' class has lesson 84 or maybe 85 and that may not be correct either.

This week coming up will be a normal week for work so that means there will be more of it and tests are coming up in Social Studies, Science and English. It is also nearing the end of 3rd quarter.

Math - my class has lesson 77 for tomorrow and Mr. Anders' class has lesson 83 and corrections for tomorrow.
Religion - finish WS 33 and do page 73 in the textbook for Thurs.
Reading - WS 94 and 95 are due for Thurs.
English - WS 3 we still didn't get to it so it needs to be ready when asked for.

Tomorrow is dress up day for Ash Wednesday. We will be attending church with the congregation at 10:00 am tomorrow. You also are welcome to attend. There is also an evening service at 7:00 pm.

Don't forget to help your child to take pictures of a servant/ service activity they are doing for Thurs.

Monday newsletter 3-7-11

General
Thank you for the great participation at late service yesterday. The choir sounded great. It was wonderful having so many of the choir there. When that happens they sound like they do when we practice during the week. This is a busy week with Lutheran Schools Week activities and preparation for Lutheran High North's Talent Festival. A special "yellow green" note was sent home with all participants today about the Talent Festival. Please check and find it so you know what is going on. If you have a question, please call, come ask or email me. Also check, there is a special note from me today about a project for making a display for Lutheran Schools Week. If you have a question about that please call, come ask or email me. Don't forget if your child wants to bring a high school student to Special Person's Day I need a note or email from you saying it is ok for them to miss their high school classes. The class will get their "big fish" t-shirts tomorrow. We just ran out of time at the end of the day. Please help your child remember to wear it on Thurs. Wed is Ash Wednesday. Come and worship with us at 10:00 am or in the evening at 7:00 pm. This is the beginning of Lent which lasts for 7 weeks and leads to Easter. Also our offerings on Wed was a little over $200 for Plumpynut. That means our school has raised enough money to feed 18 children for a month. The class also did a wonderful job presenting chapel last Wed. I was very proud of them. It was a little shaky Tues. afternoon when we practice.
Work
There is no Friday memory this week with Special Person's Day on Friday. The spelling test from Friday is tomorrow and the project is due also. We are still progressing in Science and Social Studies. There is a test in the near future but not this week. The solar systems really turned out great. A lot of wonderful ideas are displayed in creating the solar systems. Thank you for your help in this project. Do come in and check them out, they are in the hallway.
Sports
The faculty vs 7th & 8th grade teams was postponed to this Friday at 6:30 pm. They are trying to make it a family activity so the cheerleaders are involved from both 5th & 6th grade and the 7th & 8th grade. The lower grade pep club is involved. Those of us not playing are going to sit together on the floor and "support" our fellow staff members. So we would like to have all of you there if you can make it. I believe there will be some promotional activities for families to win Trinity items or even better.

assignment update 3-4-11

What a Friday. Sorry if you got caught in the come to school then go back home this morning. L'Anse Creuse called off school very late. I was driving into the parking lot at 7:15 when I heard it on the radio. The staff all made it in and was amazed but we got some much needed work done. Here are some reminders for Monday.

Memory - Friday's memory will be due on Monday
Spelling - the spelling test and project will be due on Tues
Solar System projects are due on Monday. There will be tables in the hallway for them.

Good News Choir sings at the 11:00 am service on Sunday. They need to be here by 10:40 am to warm up with Mr. Finazzo. Mrs. Scheiderer will be out of town on Sunday for something special with her family. They will be docked points if they arrive late. Mr. Finazzo needs to be in the church near 10:50 for the service.

Lutheran Schools Week is next week. There is a special dress for each day next week. Monday is "going fishing" day. They should dress like they would if they were going fishing. Tues. is beach day. Wed. is dress up day. Thurs. is the "Big Fish" t-shirt day and Friday is normal dress for Special Persons Day.

Here is some information that you will get in a note about a special project I need your help with for Lutheran Schools Week.
Using the "FISH" theme I would like each 5th grader take 4 or 5 pictures of themselves doing some type of service for someone. It can be doing something for you, a sibling, a neighbor, a relative, etc. The pictures should include: 1 beginning picture, 2 or 3 action/doing pictures and 1 finish picture or a picture of whom was served. If you could, print a 4x6 print of the pictures that would be great. If you can't print them, email them to me. This needs to be done by Thurs. Mar. 10th. On Thurs. we will use the pictures and arrange them in the shape of a fish on the wall outside of the classroom. Thanks for your help in this project.

Faculty vs 7th and 8th grade teams basketball game tomorrow at 6:30 pm. I will be in the "support staff" section this year. Being a new SC who is out of shape I thought it wise to be in that section rather than the participatory section.
